English. A few words about myself.
I am a singer, actress, independent researcher, writer, visual artist, teacher, reader, and thinker. By approved standard definition I am an Italian-Peruvian woman. Although, in reality, things are more complex than that. I was born in Peru, where I lived my childhood before moving to Italy. Even if most of my close ancestors were Genoese Italians, in my family I have English (via the USA), Spanish, French, Greek, Native American, African and, supposedly, even Scottish, German and Swedish ancestors as far as I know. How do I know it? Obvioulsy because I know where my parents, grandparents and great-grandparents came from and I heard some stories they were passing on, but also because I’ve done some research on my family names.
Pushed by my family story and also my free spirit, I’ve lived in Peru, Italy, but also in the USA, England, Spain and Germany and traveled also a little bit to fulfill my curiosity and learn about our wonderful planet. Yes, I have been a kind of ‘naughty girl’ moving around, working, reading, learning, doing art, knowing people, and observing the world we live in. You can really say: tough for a woman who is not rich, and you are right, sometimes it was hard, nevertheless it has been very interesting, one of the most interesting things I’ve done.
Perhaps you are wondering why I’ve been singing in Spanish? Undoubtedly, our first cultural encounter, the one that happens when we are kids, has a deep and long-lasting imprinting on us. And for me that encounter happened in Hispanic America, with its traditions, its official language, its dances and music.
At the age of three or four, first dance came to me, but soon after singing arrived. What a joy! What a good and healthy fun! In a way I was particularly lucky as my maternal grandmother was a singer when she was young, a singer of creole waltzers and tangos, while her younger sister was a pianist and accordionist; while my mother and my stepfather were deeply fond of Afro-Peruvian music and boleros. Additionally, my mom didn’t disdain different genres coming from Hispanic American countries, Spain, Italy, the US and the world, nor concerts of Beethoven or ballets of Tchaikovsky. There was rarely a week end of my childhood without music. And I loved dancing and singing! I think this is how I started to love music and singing. This was my beginning.
When I became a young adult, singing in Spanish was one of my dreams, but I had four enemies: shyness, an unsupportive family, not much money and an unreceptive Italian environment to the kind of music I wanted to play, though they loved to dance salsa, cumbias… However, I studied theater in Italy, where I worked as an actress for a few years before starting a job as a journalist and leaving singing at the door.
It was in Spain, just some years ago, where I decided to overcome my personal limits and do what I loved: singing, singing in Spanish! From Spain I moved to Berlin, Germany, where I have been performing, principally tangos, with international musicians.
Currently I am working on a show and a book about the True History of Tango: the black and Hispanic American history of this musical genre.

Español. Unas cuantas palabras sobre mí.
Soy cantante, actríz, investigadora independiente, escritora, artista plástica, profesora, lectora y pensadora. Según la definición oficial estandard, soy italoperuana. Pero en realidad, las cosas son más complicadas. Nací en el Perú, donde viví mi niñez, luego mi familia me llevó a Italia. Aun si la mayor parte de mis ancestros cercanos eran italianos genoveses, en mi familia tengo antepasados ingleses (a través de los Estados Unidos), españoles, franceses, griegos, nativos americanos, africanos y, supuestamente, también escoceses, alemanes y suecos, por lo que he descubierto hasta el día de hoy. ¿Cómo lo se? Obviamente porque se de donde eran mis padres, abuelos y bisabuelos y he escuchado algunas de las historias que ellos contaban, pero también porqué he investigado un poco sobre mis apellidos.
Empujada por mi historia familiar y también por mi espíritu libre y curioso, he vivido en el Perú y en Italia, y también en los Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, España y Alemania y he viajado un poco para saciar mi curiosidad y aprender sobre nuestro maravilloso planeta. Sí, he sido una especie de ‘muchacha traviesa’, moviendome de un lado a otro, trabajando, leyendo, aprendiendo, haciendo arte, conociendo gente, y observando el mundo en el que vivimos. Puedes bien decirlo: difícil para una mujer que no es rica, y tienes razón, a veces fue difícil, pero aun así viajar y vivir en distintos países ha sido una de las cosas más interesantes que he hecho hasta hoy en mi vida.
¿Quizás te estés preguntando por qué he estado contanto en español? Indudablemente nuestro primer encuentro cultural, el que tiene lugar cuando somos niños, deja una impresión profunda y duradera en nosotros. Y para mí ese encuentro sucedió en Hispanoamérica, con sus tradiciones, su lengua oficial, sus danzas y su música.
A la edad de tres o cuatro años, primero me hechizó el baile, poco después me embrujó el canto. ¡Qué alegría! ¡Qué diversión tan buena y saludable! En un cierto sentido tuve suerte ya que mi abuela materna había sido cantante profesional cuando era joven, cantaba valses criollos y tangos, mientras que su hermana menor era pianista y acordeonista. En cambio mi madre y mi padrastro eran grandes aficionados de música afroperuana y de boleros. Además mi mamá no desdeñaba otros géneros musicales provenientes de países hispanoamericanos, España, Italia, Estados Unidos o de otros lugares del mundo, ni los conciertos de Beethoven, ni los ballets de Tchaikovsky. Creo que rara vez hubo un fin de semana de mi infancia sin música. ¡Yo adoraba bailar y cantar! Y creo que así comencé a amar la música y el canto. Este fue mi comienzo.
Cuando me volví adulta, cantar en español era uno de mis sueños, pero tenía cuatro enemigos: la timidez, una familia que no me apoyaba, poco dinero, un ambiente italiano poco receptivo al tipo de música que yo quería hacer, a pesar de que adoraban bailar salsa, cumbia, calipso… Aun así, estudié teatro en Italia, donde trabajé como actríz durante unos pocos años antes de comenzar a trabajar como periodista, dejando, guardado en el fondo de un cajón, mi deseo de cantar.
Fue en España, hace apenas unos años, donde decidí superar mis límites personales y hacer lo que me gustaba: cantar, cantar en español. De España me fui a vivir a Berlín, Alemania, donde he estado haciendo conciertos, principalmente de tango, con músicos internacionales.
Actualmente estoy trabajando en la realización de un espectáculo y de un libro sobre la verdadera historia NEGRA (e hispána) del tango.
